Food and diet tips to improve sperm quality
1.Folic acid and Vitamin B12
Many people think that folic acid is only beneficial to women. In fact folic acid is also good for men too. There is a close relationship between folic acid concentration and sperm concentration and quantity in the body. Some studies have shown that the lack of vitamin B12 is possible to reduce sperm motility by 40%. On the other hand, taking zinc together with folic acid can increase the amount of sperm up to 74% in infertile males. Consuming more fruits, vegetables and beans can increase folic acid concentration in the body.
2. Omega-3 and DHA
Including deep-sea fish, such as salmon and eel, in your diet can help enhance sperm motility, strengthen sperm tail motion and make sperm swim further. However, it should be noted that omega-3 has antihypertensive effect, people taking blood-thinning medications or with hypotension should not take too much omega-3.
3. Zinc
An insufficient of zinc in the body will also affect sperm quality. As zinc cannot be produced in the body, it has to be obtained from food. Oysters, scallops, shrimps and milk can aid zinc absorption, which can enhance sperm motility.
4. Selenium
There are studies showing that the sperm ability will be reduced if there is not enough selenium in the body. To ensure there is a sufficient amount of selenium, males can eat more red meat and seafood in order to increase sperm motility.
5. Vitamin A
Pork livers, eggs and dairy products contain a large amount of vitamin A, which can promote the growth of cells and tissues. However, it has to be noted that excessive intake of vitamin A may result in liver damage and poisoning.
Apart from vitamin A, carotene can also increase the sperm concentration. Carotene can be found in red, orange, yellow and green vegetables such as carrots, pumpkins and peppers.
6. Vitamin C
Vitamin C, which can be found in dark green, yellowish green vegetables, oranges and tomatoes, can help increase sperm motility.
7. Vitamin E
Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant that can protect the unsaturated fatty acids in the body from oxidation. Males can eat more nuts (such as peanuts and almonds) and vegetable oils to absorb more vitamin E, which can promote sperm motility.
